Analyzing Effects from Land Use Change in the Watershed

Researchers

Overview

Research staff and visiting scientists conduct research and monitoring within the watersheds and boundaries of the Reserve. Collaborative efforts include analyzing the impacts of mosquito control aerial spraying, mangrove and oyster reef ecology, restoration ecology, estuarine fisheries, and nutrient cycling.

Researchers also use computer-based Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map critical habitats and flow ways. Research results provide important information for use in adaptive management throughout the Reserve.

Least Terns

Least Terns Least tern monitoring within the Reserve is now underway for 2008.

At the close of the 2007 least tern nesting season, approximately 56 least tern chicks have fledged from two nesting colonies within the Rookery Bay Reserve managed area. Once the birds leave later this month for their wintering grounds in Mexico, Central America or northern South America, the posted areas will be reopened.
