From migrating whales to sunken ships, Gulf of Mexico treasures have inspired many coastal residents to protect their local waterways.
The Gulf of Mexico spans about 1,000 miles from east to west, encompassing a vast area of water that is shared by several U.S. states and three countries. But increasing pollution and other pressures on the Gulf are compromising its health.
To address these impacts, the Gulf of Mexico Alliance was initiated in 2004 by the five Gulf State Governors. Together, they pledged to protect and enhance the environmental and economic health of the whole Gulf Region. |
As a result of a shared vision for a healthy and resilient Gulf of Mexico region, the Gulf States of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas formalized the Gulf of Mexico Alliance in 2004. The Alliance recognizes the economy and quality of life for citizens of the Gulf are linked to its ecological health. Through the collaborative leadership of local, state and federal government partners, and the active participation of businesses and non-governmental organizations, the Alliance is addressing six priority issues facing the Gulf region. The Governor’s Action Plan for Healthy & Resilient Coasts, endorsed by all five Governors, outlines specific actions needed to achieve the Alliance’s mission. Workshops and Professional Resources |
The Gulf of Mexico Alliance in Florida is currently working with the University of South Florida’s Center for scientists and mass media to develop and host workshops to improve and increase communication between scientists and the media and public. Several additional workshops have addressed issues that matter to Southwest Florida residents including Red Tide, Water Quality and Environmental Education.
Resources including media press packets, a communication “tip sheet” for scientists, examples of successful partnerships between media and scientists, and “Gulf of Mexico Minute”, 90-second radio podcasts, are available for download at www.supportthegulf.org/media-section.
