Collier County Florida-Friendly use of Fertilizer on Urban Landscapes
To reduce the risk of fertilizer runoff and other improper landscaping practices from contributing to nutrient pollution in County waters, Collier County adopted the Florida-Friendly Use of Fertilizer on Urban Landscapes ordinance on July 26, 2011. This ordinance regulates the proper use of fertilizer by any applicator, requires proper training of commercial and institutional fertilizer applicators and lawn services, establishes prohibited application period, specifies fertilizer application rates and methods, grass and plant trimmings practices, and exemptions.
Training requirements:
- At least one employee per landscaping company must complete the Green Industries Best Management Practices (GI-BMP) training within 180 days (6 months) from August 9, 2011.
- In 2012, all lawn maintenance and landscaping businesses will need to have at least one employee with the GI-BMP certificate in order to obtain Collier County Local Business Tax Certificate.
- In 2014, all commercial applicators will need to have the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) Limited Commercial Fertilizer Applicator Certificate (LCFAC), which requires the same GI-BMP training.
